Robert Frost (1874-1963)*
STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING
Whose woods these are I think I know.
雖然他家住那個莊村; His house is in the village though; 他就住在那個莊村;
He will not see me stopping here 他不知我在此稍待(註)
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
為何停駐在無村郊外, To stop without a farmhouse near 幹麼停在無村郊外;
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
但我必須信守諾言; But I have promises to keep, 但我必須信守諾言;
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
Dust of Snow
The way a crow
Shook down on me
From a hemlock tree
Has given my heart
A change of mood
And saved some part
Of a day I had rued.
A minor Bird
I have wished a bird would fly away,
不要竟日吱喳在我門前。 And not sing by my house all day;
Have clapped my hands at him from the door,
When it seemed as if I could bear no more.
The fault must partly have been in me,
The bird was not to blame for his key.
And of course there must be something wrong,
In wanting to silence any song.
Nothing Gold Can Stay
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
初發葉芽即是花; Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
